“We are very pleased to announce that Paul Maurer Shows has only increased the discount carnival wristband by $1 this year” said fair CEO Rebecca Desmond. “ The plan was to go up to $20 but in recognition of the tough economic times, the presale wristbands are only $16.”
Wristband coupons are $16 now through August 11 and can be exchanged at the carnival during the fair for a wristband for unlimited rides all day and night on any one day of the fair. During the fair, the wristband will be $26 and sold only until 8 p.m.

CLAY WALKER RETURNING TO SISKIYOU GOLDEN FAIR AFTER 2008 CANCELLATION

YREKA—The Siskiyou Golden Fair is pleased to announce that chart-topping country singer Clay Walker will be the headline act at the 2009 Siskiyou Golden Fair on August 13, making up the last-minute cancellation from last year.

“We are thrilled that Mr. Walker has decided to make up this date,” said fair CEO Rebecca Desmond. “He cancelled 24 hours prior to the show last year when his wife went into labor earlier than expected and he flew home to Texas to be there for the birth of his son.”

Walker agreed to return to Yreka this year and his fans are thrilled. The great comedy duo Williams & Ree will be opening for Walker. They are a favorite of Siskiyou County residents with their great rural humor.

“The other good news is that prime tickets will only be $25 this year,” Desmond said.

Whether on stage or in the recording studio, Walker never gives less than a hundred percent, and it's that kind of dedicated work ethic combined with God-given talent that have made him one of the most successful country acts of the past decade. He first topped the Billboard country singles chart in 1993 with "What's It to You" and followed with his second consecutive No. 1 hit, "Live Until I Die." Since then he's placed 31 titles on Billboard's singles chart including such additional chart toppers as "Dreaming with my Eyes Open," "If I Could Make Living," "This Woman and This Man," and "Rumor Has It." (The latter two songs each spent two weeks at the summit.) He's enjoyed his share of success and has consistently been one of the busiest artists on the road. He's scored four platinum-selling albums, signifying sales of a million units, and two gold albums, discs that sold over 500,000 units.

His latest album is titled “Fall” and the title song is his favorite. This is his first album under his new label Curb Records. Walker says his approach to the new album was simple: "The biggest thing that I wanted to do was to just get songs on the radio and make music that people love. I wanted to continue the style they've known me for and not change things too much because the music we've made in the past is good music. Mainly I was looking for stronger lyrics. I think you try to do that with every record, and the more you record, the better you get at being able to pick hit songs."

It's an impressive feat, made even more special because Walker was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 10 years ago. "If you'd asked me when I was diagnosed that first day if I would still be alive, I would have said 'No' because that's what the doctor's said," he admits. "Here I am, 10 years later and actually I'm probably healthier than I was 10 years ago."

After more than a decade in the national spotlight, Clay Walker believes the best is yet to come. "I trust my gut more than ever now," he says. "I definitely don't feel like a rookie, but at the same time, I think the best years of my recording career are ahead of me."

Tickets for the Clay Walker concert will go on sale in May at a cost of $25 for dress circle and box seats, $20 reserved grandstand and $15 general admission, which won’t go on sale until the other tickets are sold out or day-of-show.

For more information, contact the fair office at 842-2767 or info@sisqfair.com. The 2009 Siskiyou Golden Fair, “A Blast with Memories to Last,” runs August 12-16 in Yreka.

2009 SPORTSMEN’S EXPO A HUGE SUCCESS!

YREKA— More than 1,500 people made their way to the Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds on Saturday for the 2009 PremierWest Bank Siskiyou Sportsmen’s Expo for a fun-filled day for the family.

“It was our best expo yet,” said fair CEO Rebecca Desmond. “The weather cooperated and the families had a blast!”

Youngsters were challenged early on by the trout this year at the California Department of Fish & Game pond but the bite rate picked up it the afternoon. Other young people were busy climbing the US Army rock wall and still others were taking a hand at archery with the Siskiyou Bowmen. Parents and other adults were busy talking with vendors who filled two exhibit buildings and acres of space outside.

Back for its third year, the Boone & Crockett Head & Horn Measuring by Northwest Big Game created big surprises for the many people who brought in trophy heads and horns to be measured. Jerry Giacomelli of Fort Jones took home top honors in the Les Schwab Tire sponsored competition for a non-typical black tail deer. Second place in the competition went to Jason Nelson of Fort Jones for his Columbia black tail typical velvet deer and Dave Hall of Montague won third place with a non-typical black tail deer. David Morris, from North West Big Game, continues to be surprised at the quality of head and horn trophies here in Siskiyou County.

This was the third year for the Original State of Jefferson Top Camp Cook Contest. There were four Siskiyou County teams and two from Shasta County. The 2009 championship went to Ryan and Jessica Mannix of Yreka for their smoked buffalo chili. The Mannixes placed second in 2008. Second place this year went to Mike Foster of Cottonwood for his bleu cheese steak and third place was won by Josh Freeman of Weed for his spicy brisket and squash with garlic bread. The Mannix family took home a plaque and a barbecue donated by Sears. Larry Weldon from Mount Shasta won the Most Unique Cooking Device award for his unique barbecue.

“Each year this event keeps getting bigger and better,” said Desmond. “We can’t thank our vendors, volunteer demonstrators, sponsors and the public for making the Sportsmen’s Expo such a success!”

SISKIYOU GOLDEN FAIR WINS TOP WFA AWARDS
YREKA—The Siskiyou Golden Fair has been honored for Creative Management by the Western Fairs Association. At the recent WFA Convention in Reno, Nevada, the Siskiyou Golden Fair brought home two first, three seconds and one third award for the 2008 fair season.

The fair was honored in the categories of Community Outreach (Rotary First Harvest Garden), Non-Traditional Revenue (billboard), Best Competition (Give Away A Smile), Community Relevance (community relevance outreach program), Fair Affiliated 501(c)3 Organization (10th DAA Friends of the Fair) and Conservation Programs or Being Green (overall fairgrounds “green” operations).

“We are very proud of these awards,” said fair CEO Rebecca Desmond. “The Siskiyou Golden Fair strives to be one of the best little fairs on the West Coast and these awards show that we are accomplishing that.”

These awards represent the fair’s commitment to its community through growing produce for the hungry, providing handmade blankets and stuffed animals to victims of domestic violence, doing its part in operating in a green fashion with recycling, composting and other operational practices, and having a supportive nonprofit organization like the Friends of the Fair.

Each year, fairs throughout the West submit award entries for recognition by the Western Fairs Association.

Desmond credited her entire staff for all of their hard work and dedication which led ot the awards. She said she is especially proud of the Rotary First Harvest Garden that provided nearly 500 pounds of food to local food banks in Siskiyou County through 130 volunteer hours and the guidance of Siskiyou Golden Fair Exhibit Representative Janet Eastlick.

SISKIYOU GOLDEN FAIR’S CEO ELECTED TO WESTERN FAIRS ASSOCIATION OFFICE
YREKA—Siskiyou Golden Fair CEO Rebecca Desmond was installed as Treasurer of the Western Fairs Association at the recent convention in Reno, Nevada.

Founded in 1922 and incorporated in 1945, Western Fairs Association (WFA) is a non-profit trade association serving the fair industry throughout the Western United States and Canada. The association's primary purpose is to assist in maintaining the highest professional standards within the fair industry through a voluntary network of individuals and organizations. The primary objective of Western Fairs Association is to promote the prosperity of fairs through educational activities, training programs, and legislative advocacy.

Currently Western Fairs serves more than 2,000 members, representing fair-related businesses, fair management, fair board directors, festivals, and industry associations. This membership is represented by a 23-member elected board of directors that governs the activities and policies of the association.

Desmond, who is beginning her tenth year as CEO of the Siskiyou Golden Fair, has been a director on the board of WFA for the past four years and just stepped down as the president of the California Fair Alliance after a two-year term.

“I am very honored to have been chosen by my colleagues to go up through the chairs of WFA,” Desmond said. “Western Fairs provides great training, advocacy and networking for fairs and is an invaluable entity to any fairgrounds.”

Desmond is very involved in the fair industry with memberships in WFA, CFA, California Fair Services Authority (eight years on the board of directors), and the International Association of Fairs & Expositions as well as sitting on numerous one-time committees formed by the California Division of Fairs & Expositions.

“I am a firm believer that an involved fair is an informed fair,” said Desmond.

She said the biggest challenge facing fairs throughout the country this year is how to keep the fair affordable to customers who are facing tough economic times. Attendance is predicted to be low and many fairs, including the Siskiyou Golden Fair, are keeping prices in line with 2008.

“We are not raising admission prices this year, our parking is always free, and we will continue with our Community Night on the opening night of the fair with admission free for everyone,” Desmond said. “Everyone has a chance to come to the Siskiyou Golden Fair and help celebrate our community.”
She said the fair is also focusing on its roots this year in new competitive exhibit classes, special contests including Siskiyou County’s Best Apple Pie, and a large emphasis on children’s exhibits.
Desmond, 47, lives in Quartz Valley with her husband Patrick and their daughter Eleonore.

The 2009 fair, “A Blast with Memories to Last,” runs August 12-16 in Yreka.

SISKIYOU GOLDEN FAIR THEME CONTEST UNDERWAY

YREKA, CA— It seems like this year’s fair just ended, but it is time for the 2009 Siskiyou Golden Fair theme contest!

The Siskiyou Golden Fair is extending an invitation to residents and organizations of Siskiyou County to enter the annual theme contest. The winner of this contest has the pleasure of knowing their theme will be used in the overall advertising campaign used to promote the 2009 fair. During the fair it will also be used to set the motif for the construction of feature booths, flower arrangements, cake decorations, and more. The theme needs to be "catchy" and easily usable in fair advertising and promotion. Just think about what the Siskiyou Golden Fair means to you and what would be a great marketing theme. Any Siskiyou County resident or organization may submit one entry. Prior winners are ineligible to participate the following year. Theme entries must be six words or less. The name of the fair is not part of the theme.

The deadline for entering this year’s contest is November 27, 2008. The winning theme will be used in its entirety or as a building block for the 2009 Siskiyou Golden Fair theme.

The author of the chosen theme will receive a cash prize of $100 plus a season pass to the 2009 fair. Entries may be mailed or hand delivered to: Siskiyou Golden Fair Theme Contest, 1712 Fairlane Road, Yreka, CA 96097 or sent to info@sisqfair.com.
