SISKIYOU GOLDEN FAIR CEO
EARNS
FAIR EXECUTIVE HONOR |
YREKA—The
Siskiyou Golden Fair recently announced that fair CEO Rebecca
Desmond has been designated a Certified Fair Executive by the
International Association of Fairs & Expositions.
The certification is based upon a rigid scorecard of management
skills, education, and leadership. The award designation was
made April 27 in Salt Lake City, Utah during the IAFE Annual
Spring Management Conference. Desmond was unable to attend due
to work commitments.
Drawing from over 3,200 organized fairs in the United States and
Canada, 18 fair executives qualified for the coveted CFE award
in 2008.
“I am very honored to have been bestowed with this wonderful
certification,” Desmond said. “The International Association of
Fairs & Expositions is a valued organization in the fair
industry and is responsible for much of the training and
education fair executives have available to them. I am grateful
to them for recognizing my efforts on behalf of fairs and my
commitment to the industry.”
Desmond, 43, has lived in Siskiyou County for more than 30 years
and has been CEO of the Siskiyou Golden Fair since January 2000.
She showed hogs at the fair beginning at age 11 and then helped
in her parents’ commercial booth for Montague Aviation through
her college years.
|
Desmond began working with the fair in
publicity and then entertainment beginning in 1983.
Desmond serves the fair industry in a number of ways including
serving as chair of the California Fair Alliance, board member
of the Western Fairs Association, and board member of the
California Fair Services Authority.
A very involved community
member, Desmond has contributed much to her community through
past and present service in various organizations including Soroptimist International of Yreka, Rotary International of
Yreka, Yreka Chamber of Commerce Advisory Committee, American
Red Cross Siskiyou Chapter, Siskiyou Training and Employment
Program, Siskiyou Bioregional Group, Siskiyou Arts Council, and
the Scott Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Desmond graduated from
CSU, Chico in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and
returned in 1997 to obtain a master’s degree in Political
Science, graduating with distinction in 1999.

FREE FISHING, ROCK CLIMBING, KIDS ARCHERY RANGE, RECORD
HORNS—2008 SPORTSMEN’S EXPO A HUGE SUCCESS! |
|
YREKA—An estimated
1,500 people made their way to the Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds
on Saturday for the 2008 PremierWest Bank Siskiyou Sportsmen’s
Expo for a fun-filled day for the family.
“Despite a few snow showers here and there, this was our most
successful show yet,” said fair CEO Rebecca Desmond. “If you
were a kid, this was an especially fun day!”
Youngsters were hauling fish out of the California Department of
Fish & Game pond at a record pace while other young people were
busy climbing the California National Guard rock wall and still
others were taking a hand at archery with the Siskiyou Bowmen.
Parents and other adults were busy talking with vendors who
filled two exhibit buildings and acres of space outside.
Back for its third year, the Boone & Crockett Head & Horn Measuring
by Northwest Big Game created big surprises for the many people
who brought in trophy heads and horns to be measured. Tom Ward
of Yreka took home top honors for a 234 5/8 inch non-typical
mule deer that was killed by near Lakeview, Oregon in the 1930s.
It was 15 inches over the minimum Boon & Crockett score. Second
place in the competition went to Reece Gomes of Fort Jones for a
152 3/8 white tail deer that was bagged in Idaho. Dale Evans of
Yreka won third place with a 173 5/8 and 30” mule deer, also
from Idaho. David Morris, from North West Big Game, continues to
be surprised at the quality of head and horn trophies here in
Siskiyou County. |

This was the second year for the Original State of Jefferson Top
Camp Cook Contest. Six Siskiyou County people entered and spent
the day cooking up award winning camp “grub.”
The 2008
championship went to Joseph DeMurcurio for his seared duck
breast with a brandy and cheery reduction sauce. Second place
went to Ryan and Jessica Mannix of Yreka for their Baja Buffalo
Chili and third place was won by Lucas Groom of Dunsmuir for his
salmon steak provincial.
Six contestants vied for the title with
amazing camp dishes that wowed the judges in the blind tasting. DeMurcurio took home a plaque and a barbecue donated by Sears.
Jason Wooldridge from Fort Jones won the Most Unique Cooking
Device award for his camp butane heater rotisserie.
“Each year this event keeps getting bigger and better,” said
Desmond. “We can’t thank our vendors, volunteer demonstrators,
sponsors and the public for making the Sportsmen’s Expo such a
success!”
Desmond went on to praise her staff members Michelle Eiler and
Mike Luiz for their dedication and enthusiasm in producing the
expo. “It’s their show and I couldn’t be more pleased with how
it turned out,” she said.

SISKIYOU GOLDEN FAIR PICKS
UP MORE AWARDS |
|
YREKA—The
Siskiyou Golden Fair has once again been honored for its 2007
fair, this time through the Western Fairs Association.
The Siskiyou Golden Fair has won four awards through the WFA
Achievement Awards Program. The fair received two first place
honors, one for the new youth survey and one for a Stanely Krute
photo of Pee Wee Showmanship.
A second place award was given to the fair for another Krute
photo of the youth talent show that appeared in the Siskiyou
Source newspaper and the fair received an honorable mention for
its Wheelbarrow Garden Contest.
“We are thrilled, once again, to be recognized for our
programming and publicity,” said fair CEO Rebecca Desmond. “The
credit for the two program awards really goes to Janet Eastlick
who was a WFA intern for us last year. She developed the youth
survey and worked with the Siskiyou County Farm Bureau on the
wheelbarrow garden contest.
“And what more can you say about Stan Krute? He is just a superb
photographer and we so pleased to have him on our team.”

CLAY WALKER TO HEADLINE
SISKIYOU GOLDEN FAIR
WITH STEVE HOLY OPENING |
|
YREKA—Chart-topping country singer Clay Walker will be the
headline act at the 2008 Siskiyou Golden Fair on August 7, with
fellow country hit maker Steve Holy opening the show.
“We are very excited about this line-up,” said fair CEO Rebecca
Desmond. “We have been striving hard each year to bring a
quality concert to Siskiyou County and this one certainly fits
the bill.”
Whether on stage or in the recording studio, Walker never gives
less than a hundred percent, and it's that kind of dedicated
work ethic combined with God-given talent that have made him one
of the most successful country acts of the past decade. He first
topped the Billboard country singles chart in 1993 with "What's
It to You" and followed with his second consecutive No. 1 hit,
"Live Until I Die."
Since then he's placed 31 titles on Billboard's singles chart
including such additional chart toppers as "Dreaming with my
Eyes Open," "If I Could Make Living," "This Woman and This Man,"
and "Rumor Has It." (The latter two songs each spent two weeks
at the summit.) He's enjoyed his share of success and has
consistently been one of the busiest artists on the road. He's
scored four platinum-selling albums, signifying sales of a
million units, and two gold albums, discs that sold over 500,000
units.
His latest album is titled “Fall” and the title song is his
favorite. This is his first album under his new label Curb
Records. Walker says his approach to the new album was simple:
"The biggest thing that I wanted to do was to just get songs on
the radio and make music that people love. I wanted to continue
the style they've known me for and not change things too much
because the music we've made in the past is good music. Mainly I
was looking for stronger lyrics. I think you try to do that with
every record, and the more you record, the better you get at
being able to pick hit songs."
It's an impressive feat, made even more special because Walker
was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 10 years ago. "If you'd
asked me when I was diagnosed that first day if I would still be
alive, I would have said 'No' because that's what the doctor's
said," he admits. "Here I am, 10 years later and actually I'm
probably healthier than I was 10 years ago."
After more than a decade in the national spotlight, Clay Walker
believes the best is yet to come. "I trust my gut more than ever
now," he says. "I definitely don't feel like a rookie, but at
the same time, I think the best years of my recording career are
ahead of me." |
With his blend of 50's rock & roll, pop and traditional country,
Steve Holy has crafted a unique sound that has won fans over
across the nation. Refusing to be labeled musically and sticking
to his country roots, Holy sites country greats Charlie Rich,
Mickey Gilley and John Conlee as his influences, but is quick to
add that Elvis, Sam Cooke, and a variety of Doo-Wop bands play a
major role in his vocal style and on-stage persona.
Holy's engaging stage performance alone has created a loyal
following. Although, his primary objective is to connect with
them on an up-close and personal basis, he naturally and
unconsciously dazzles fans and listeners alike, capturing them
immediately. Holy is charming, charismatic and captivating.
In 1997, Holy signed with Curb Records. He launched his debut
album Blue Moon (as produced by Wilbur Rimes--who guided his
daughter LeAnn Rimes' career to become one of country music's
most talented and influential artists) in October 2000. The
initial offering, dubbed "5090" by Rack Clark of Dick Clark
Productions for its tribute to both the 1950's and 1990's era,
included a swing-driven single entitled "Don't Make Me Beg"
which was released as Holy's debut single from the album to set
his course in motion.
Holy has enjoyed incredible success to jump-start his musical
career. His second single from the album, "Blue Moon," featuring
more traditional country sounds was released in April 2000 and
climbed all the way to Number 19 on the charts. His third
single, "The Hunger," delivered a pop-folk feel and made it to
Number 20; and just eighteen months after the release of the
album, Holy's fourth single "Good Morning Beautiful," for which
he is most widely recognized, charted at Number 1 for five
straight weeks in 2002. The single was also featured in the
Jennifer Lopez movie Angel Eyes.
Holy's long awaited second CD, "Brand New Girlfriend" was
released in 2006. The album debuted at number two on the country
charts. Singles from this CD included "Brand New Girlfriend,"
"Come On Rain," and his current single "Men Buy The Drinks.
Steve earned his second number one single with "Brand New
Girlfriend." This song was also the number one dance song for
2006.
Tickets will go on sale for the Siskiyou Golden Fair grandstand
events on Thursday, May 29 at 5:30 p.m.

AT THE SISKIYOU GOLDEN FAIR |
|
YREKA—Packets and record books for junior livestock exhibitors
showing as independents at the 2008 Siskiyou Golden Fair, are
ready to be picked up at the fair office.
An independent exhibitor is someone who does not show livestock
at the fair through an organized club such as 4-H, FFA or
Grange. Independent exhibitors are required to attend meetings,
perform one community service, and maintain record books
regarding their livestock projects. These requirements apply to
independent exhibitors showing market animals, not breeding
projects.
Proof of ownership deadlines for the 2008 fair are April 8 for
beef and dairy cattle (120 days prior to fair); June 9 for hogs
and sheep (60 days prior to fair); and July 7 for rabbits and
poultry (30 days prior to fair). Only independent junior
livestock exhibitors showing market animals are required to file
Proof of Ownership documents with the fair.
Complete information regarding the independent junior livestock
exhibitor program is available at the fair office in Yreka or by

SISKIYOU
GOLDEN FAIR IS THE “BEST” IN AGRICULTURE |
|
YREKA—The Siskiyou Golden Fair has once again been recognized by
the International Association of Fairs & Expositions (IAFE) for
outstanding agriculture programming. This year, the Fair
received top honors with a Best of Division award for fairs
under 100,000 in attendance for its consumer protection program
of banning food in the livestock barns at the 2007 Fair.
 |
“We are very honored to have been recognized at this level for
this program,” said Fair CEO Rebecca Desmond. “Establishing the
no-food-in-the-barns rule was not received positively by
everyone, but was a necessary move as we continue to work on
keeping our exhibitors and patrons safe from harmful pathogens
that can come with the territory when you are dealing with
livestock.”
Along with the Best of Division Award, the Siskiyou Golden Fair
received a first place Agricultural Award of Excellence in the
Program Designed to Correct an Issue or Problem Related to a
Competitive or Non-Competitive Agriculture Program for the
no-food-in-the-barns program.
This program is part of the Fair’s
overall consumer protection program that includes educating the
public about taking precautions when visiting the livestock area
or petting the animals by washing hands prior to eating.
|
A first place was also given to the Fair for Best Agriculture
Photo in the division of fairs with 100,000 attendance and below
for a wonderful Pee Wee Showmanship photo taken by Fair
photographer Stanley Krute.
The picture captures the great pride the youngsters have in
winning a livestock competition at a very young age.
A second place award was also given for the Fair and Sponsor
Joint Exhibit Program for the Fair’s partnership with the
Siskiyou County Farm Bureau in the Wheelbarrow Garden Contest.
This program involved children at community resource centers
throughout the county planting a wheelbarrow garden while
learning about agriculture through the summer. The wheelbarrows
were then judged at the fair.
There are a total of 13 Agriculture Award categories, each
divided into five divisions by fair attendance, that a fair can
enter. The entries are evaluated and judged by a team of
industry leaders.
These individuals are selected from membership
of IAFE, which has more than 3,200 members around the globe.
The awards were presented during the Agriculture Awards
Breakfast on November 27 during the 117th Annual IAFE Convention
in Las Vegas, NV. These awards are sponsored by John Deere, an
avid supporter of the fair and expo industry around the world.
“We take great pride in having been selected for these
prestigious honors,” said Desmond. “The Best of Division award
is definitely an honor and inspires us to continue with our
progressive agriculture programs.”

SISKIYOU GOLDEN FAIR
SEEKS COMMUNITY INPUT |
|
YREKA—The Siskiyou Golden Fair is seeking community input on
future capital improvements at the fairgrounds. The Fair Board
will be embarking on a facility planning process beginning in
January and is seeking input from the public on what they would
like to see improved at the Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds.
A community survey is available by
clicking here. The Fair is requesting community members to
please visit the website and participate in the survey between
now and January 14, 2008.
“We are very excited about receiving input from our customers
through this community survey,” said Fair CEO Rebecca Desmond.
“We are hoping to receive some major capital improvement money
from the state Division of Fairs & Expositions over the next six
years and we want the community’s help in trying to determine
the best projects to use that money toward.”
The results of the survey will be posted on the website once the
survey deadline has passed. Desmond said the online survey is
one of the most efficient ways to gather information from the
Fair’s stakeholders and customers.
“We are just the caretakers of the community’s fairgrounds,”
Desmond said. “We want them to be able to have more input on how
we take care of the fairgrounds for this generation and those to
come.”
All funding from the Division of Fairs comes from para-mutual
horse racing licensing fees. The Fair receives no state tax
dollars and is responsible for raising approximately 80% of its
annual operating budget itself.
For more information, contact the fair at 842-2767 or

YREKA—The 10th DAA Friends of the Fair is proud to offer
residents of Siskiyou County the opportunity to become a
permanent part of the Siskiyou Golden Fair through the Friends
annual brick campaign.
“Friends of the Fair is an organization dedicated to improving
and enhancing the experience of everyone at the Siskiyou Golden
Fair,” said Friends president Cheryl Scruggs. “The brick program
is an opportunity for supporters of the Siskiyou Golden Fair to
‘leave their mark’ at the fairgrounds and to show their support
in perpetuity.”
The Friends brick program includes building a brick walkway
leading to the Friends Information Booth at the main
intersection of the fairgrounds.
The funds raised through this campaign will allow the Friends to
fund programs and projects that will offer fairgoers the
ultimate experience and education when they attend the Siskiyou
Golden Fair. |
“Commemorative bricks are a wonderful way to mark a special
occasion or memorialize loved ones,” said Scruggs. “The brick
walkway will be a permanent celebration of those who have a
special connection to the Siskiyou Golden Fair.”
Each 4”x8” brick costs $100 and will include names and/or
messages engraved in brass. Bricks can be purchased at the
Friends of the Fair Information Booth during the fair this year,
August 8-12, or in the fair office.
The walkway will be installed by the 2008 Siskiyou Golden Fair.

SISKIYOU GOLDEN FAIR
LAUNCHES YOUTH SURVEY ON WEBSITE |
|
YREKA—The Online Youth Survey is an effort to gage what the younger generation
wants to see and do at the Siskiyou Golden Fair. The project is
being conducted by the fair’s Western Fairs Association intern
Janet Eastlick.
“Kids’ and teenagers’ interests are changing each year and the
fair wants to change with them,” said fair CEO Rebecca Desmond.
“This survey is one way we can find out what the youth are doing
as far as hobbies and projects that they could enter at the
fair.”
The survey is brief and will only take minutes to complete.
The data will
then be used to introduce new exhibit categories as well as new
and different entertainment and programming at the 2008 Siskiyou
Golden Fair
